Oral Surgery You Can Trust

Not all tooth extractions and oral surgical procedures are the same — and not all providers are equally equipped to handle them. Dr. Shepard trained as an oral maxillofacial surgeon, giving him the deepest level of surgical expertise available in dentistry. Dr. Bublik with over 30 years of expertise - the match of services you can't find anywhere else.

Why does surgical training matter? An oral maxillofacial surgeon has completed advanced hospital-based residency training beyond dental school — learning to manage complex extractions, surgical anatomy, anesthesia, and complications. For routine extractions this means extra confidence and precision. For complex cases, it means you're in the right hands from the start.
🦷

Simple Tooth Extractions

Removal of fully erupted teeth that are decayed, broken, or beyond saving. Performed with minimal discomfort and fast healing.

😬

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Surgical removal of impacted or partially erupted third molars — one of the most common oral surgery procedures, done safely and efficiently.

🦴

Bone Grafting

Rebuilding lost jawbone after extractions or bone loss — creating a solid foundation for dental implants or preserving facial structure.

🔬

Sinus Lifts

Elevating the sinus floor to create bone volume in the upper jaw — making implants possible where bone height is limited.

📐

Ridge Augmentation

Reconstructing the natural contour of the gum and bone after tooth loss — improving aesthetics and creating space for implants or bridges.

🧬

Biopsies & Pathology

Evaluation and removal of suspicious oral tissue lesions for laboratory analysis — early detection of oral cancer saves lives.

🔩

Implant Placement

Surgical placement of titanium implant posts that serve as permanent tooth roots — the foundation of implant-supported restorations.

🛡️

Exposure of Impacted Teeth

Surgical uncovering of teeth stuck beneath the gumline — typically done in coordination with orthodontic treatment.

Wisdom Tooth Removal — What to Expect

Wisdom teeth — your third molars — often cause problems when they don't have room to emerge properly. Your surgeon removes wisdom teeth at all levels of complexity, from simple erupted cases to deeply impacted surgical extractions.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, damage to adjacent teeth, cyst formation, and shifting of your existing teeth. Early removal — typically in your late teens or early twenties — leads to faster healing and fewer complications.

Types of Impaction

Wisdom teeth can be soft tissue impacted (partially erupted through the gum), bony impacted (fully under the bone), or fully erupted but problematic. Each type requires a different surgical approach — all of which Dr. Bublik and Dr. Shepard handle routinely.

The Procedure

Performed under local anesthesia with sedation options available. Most wisdom tooth removals take 20–60 minutes total. You'll receive detailed aftercare instructions and prescription medications to manage post-operative discomfort.

Recovery Timeline

Initial healing takes 3–5 days. Most patients return to work or school within 2–3 days. Full tissue healing takes 3–4 weeks. Dry socket, the most common complication, is manageable and treatable if it occurs.

Sedation Options for a Stress-Free Experience

Dental anxiety is real and common. At our office we offer multiple levels of sedation so that every patient — regardless of anxiety level — can receive the care they need comfortably and safely.

💉

Local Anesthesia

Numbs the treatment area completely. You remain awake and alert. Used for all procedures as the foundation of pain control.

😮‍💨

Nitrous Oxide

Laughing gas inhaled through a small mask. Creates a relaxed, calm sensation while you remain conscious and responsive.

💊

Oral Sedation

A prescription medication taken before your appointment. You'll be deeply relaxed and may have little memory of the procedure.

😴

IV Sedation

Administered intravenously for deeper sedation. Ideal for complex procedures or severe dental anxiety. Closely monitored throughout.

Post-Surgery Aftercare Guidelines

Following your aftercare instructions carefully is the most important thing you can do to ensure smooth healing and avoid complications like dry socket or infection.

Bite gently on gauze for 30–45 minutes after surgery to control bleeding
Apply ice packs to the outside of your face — 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off
Take prescribed medications as directed, even if pain is manageable
Eat soft foods — yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes — for the first 48 hours
Avoid straws, spitting, and smoking for at least 72 hours after extraction
Keep your head elevated when resting to minimize swelling
Rinse gently with warm salt water starting 24 hours after surgery
Call our office immediately if you experience severe pain after day 3 (possible dry socket)

Oral Surgery FAQ

How do I know if I need a tooth extracted?
Common reasons for extraction include severe decay that cannot be restored with a crown, advanced gum disease causing bone loss around a tooth, a cracked tooth that extends below the gumline, crowding before orthodontic treatment, or a tooth that is causing infection or pain. Dr. Bublik always exhausts restorative options before recommending extraction.
Does tooth extraction hurt?
The procedure itself should not be painful — local anesthesia completely numbs the area, and sedation options are available if you want additional relaxation. You may feel pressure and movement but not sharp pain. After the anesthesia wears off, some soreness is normal and manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.
What is dry socket and how do I avoid it?
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms after extraction is dislodged or dissolves too early, exposing the bone. It causes significant pain typically starting 3–4 days after surgery. Avoid straws, smoking, spitting, and vigorous rinsing for the first 72 hours to protect the clot. If you develop dry socket, contact our office — it's easily treatable.
How soon after extraction can I get an implant?
In many cases, implants can be placed immediately at the time of extraction — or at the same appointment as bone grafting. In other situations, healing time of 3–6 months may be needed before implant placement. Dr. Bublik coordinates extraction and implant planning together so you have a clear timeline from day one.
Do you accept referrals from other dentists?
Yes — Dr. Bublik welcomes referrals from general dentists and other dental specialists throughout central Wisconsin. We work collaboratively with referring providers and send detailed reports after treatment. If you are a dental office looking to refer patients for oral surgery or implants, please call us directly at 715-391-3080.
